ABC Mail Delivery: Community Helpers

ABC Mail: Community helpers

Welcome to another Playful Preschool post! If you have missed any then CLICK HERE to play catch up and see what themes we’ve covered. This week we’re talking Community Helpers and I chose to keep with my love of preschool alphabet games and came up with a fun sorting game.

Over the summer we learned about the Post Office and the purpose that it serves for the community. This time I put my focus more into the workers. Fro Baby loves to take the time to talk to our mail carrier whenever she greets him. This one day led to the conversation about what his job entails.

Welcome to the ABC Mail Delivery were we sort and deliver your mail. We sort letters A-E

To start our mail deliver service mommy gathered

  • 3 cereal boxes
  • 5 sheets of construction paper
  • Tape (or glue or whatever you want to use to put it together)
  • Alphabet cards
  • Scale
  • Envelopes
  • Stamps (we used some stickers)

To make the mailboxes

  1. Cut the cereal boxes in half make sure that the flap end of boxes is sealed
  2. Cut the construction paper in half
  3. Tape the construction paper to the box halves
  4. Tape on an alphabet per box

For the Beginning letter Game you need

  • Envelopes letters A-E or whatever letters your working on
  • Beginning letter picture cards

Let’s start the game

I laid out some lettered envelopes and some beginning letter cards.

All she had to do was place the correct picture in the correct envelope. What ended up happening was. We had a talk about why the alligator might need to end up in the letter Cc envelope. Eventually we got around to her telling me what each picture was and taking her time to say and listen to the beginning sound of each card and then each letter until she got the right envelope.

Mail center After we filled our envelopes we added stamps then off to the ABC Mail Delivery Office. At ABC Mail Delivery she weighed mail, sorted upper and lowercase letters, and then delivered all letters to their correct letter address boxes.

This was just to see how well she was picking up with her uppercase and lowercase alphabets. It just so happens that she likes Mail Carriers and the post office, so it was perfect to just put these two things together. We originally started with her adding lowercase letters to uppercase letter envelopes but then she presented the picture cards (clipart from Classroom Clipart) and was working with them herself so I changed it up the next day (the day I chose to take the pictures).

We can’t just send empty envelopes. I think the mail carrier is very popular among the little kids. Who else makes sure that mommy and daddies bills get delivered?

  5. Amanda says:

I’ve wanted to take the kids to the postal sorting building, but I’ve heard it is really loud. Maybe we will just make our own sorting room! Too cute

It was very loud and hot. The machines pour out nothing but heat. Out here you can no longer take a mail tou r but you can call your local post master and setup a interview where they talk to the children about the happening in the mail room.

  6. What a fun experience for the kiddos! I agree — I would love to bring the children to the post office sorting room!

It seems like doing the same activity would be a funny activity to do for my kids. Now that they have a brother living in Bolivia for a while. Both my wife and I are wanting them to get excited in giving out the courier service the mail so that way they can get used to it.
