Hunting For Building Blocks

I was in Target the other day and seen that their Mega Bloks were on sale. So being the sale nut and Mega Blok lover that I am grabbed them and threw them in the cart. My world came to a halt right there. My three-year-old, five-year-old, and 11-year-old screamed “PUT THEM BACK!” I was floored not by them screaming at me but by them telling me to put them back.

The girls have outgrown the Mega Bloks and they don’t want anymore. They want Legos, but I hate Legos. So, me being the mom that I am, I negotiated with the hostiles. Which leads to this post right here.

We are on the hunt for building blocks that are not Mega Bloks or Legos. We walked through Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, and a few other places and came up short. So I took to Amazon and we are going to be trying out a few different kinds of building blocks.

So let’s see what Amazon has to offer that at least two of my girls want to try. Our list is pretty short people.

I was really hoping for a yes from three of the girls but I only two wanted to try out these Magmatic Building Blocks. I love that they are colorful and work with magnets.

Now I thought they would say no to these Jumbo Blocks but they didn’t. Everyone wants them and I know that in order to do some of what they want to do I need to order 3 sets. If I get these to be a keeper I have quite a few activities swarming in my head.

You all already know that I like Wooden Blocks and so do my kids. These are on our list of playing.

For the record, I didn’t pick out these Brain Flakes. Matter of fact I scrolled right past them. The three-year-old saw them and asked me to go back. From that point on it was all downhill. They want to try these but I know they won’t last with us because we had something like this before and they got lost and tossed by me like a boss. Nuff said!

Here is another building set that my girls picked out to try. These Magz-Bricks look like I can have fun with them. So I’m willing to give them a try. They are magnetic as well.

Okay, I know I said no Lego, but these are Duplo baby. These are bigger than your average small foot hurting, finding in odd places Lego. These are Legos that took just enough steroids to be seen by my bad eyes.

I know you have seen these all over the homeschool/children activities blogging world. Magna-Tiles! Well, I want in on these as well. One of my girls has tried them and she wasn’t a fan of the way she tried them. So I want to introduce her to mommies way of playing with them.

Now I am not going to get these and I won’t even let my curly haired children touch them. The girls want them though and they want them even more because I said NO. These things can get caught in your hair and might require a haircut. Bristle Blocks! They do look cool, though.

Well, ladies and gents. This concludes my list of building blocks that my girls want to try so they can find those magical building blocks that will be replacing our Mega Bloks. I am hoping for the Duplos and praying they hate the Brain Flakes. Until then.

Life is a learning adventure, go explore.

Why not Lego? We love the stuff

They are a danger to my feet. In 15 years I have stepped on my fair share of Legos. They are not allowed in my house. They can play with them at someone else house but not mines.

  5. Try Tegu! They’re pretty cool. We love all sorts of building systems around here. We have everything from wooden Chinese character blocks to magna tiles to the almost microscopic nanoblocks. I’d like to get Citiblocks next.

We love building block and I actually got my son a set of the Magmatic Blocks for Christmas… but I found them to be surprisingly disappointing. I think the idea for them seems awesome but the actual product is somehow lacking. Whenever we try to build with them they always end up in a huge magnetic pile that you have to tear through and the creation options are surprisingly limited… I think other’s have really liked them, but in my opinion you should go with one of the other kinds.
