#Playful Preschool Learning Number Words with Fall Colored Leaves

Fall Leaf Number Words

This week is all about Fall Colors and we enjoyed working with while learning about Fall and Fall Colors. We talked about why the leaves change color during the fall, the temperature change, and more. Right now our leaves are still pretty much green with some hints of yellow for the most part, but Fro Baby does know that the leaves change colors. Since we don’t have any fallen color changed leaves, the foam ones that I found at the Dollar General are going to come in handy for what I want to do. With a little modification of my activity, I opened it up for me to introduce something new but not so new to Fro Baby. Number Words!

Hey everyone and welcome to another Playful Preschool Wednesday post Fall Colors Theme. If you would like to see more activities check at the bottom of this post as well as follow the hash tag #Playfulpreschool.

Learning word numbers

We are working on numbers today, after seeing an improvement with her troubled numbers (Harvest Time Math) I felt it was okay to introduce the Number Words of a few numbers. Now we only worked on one- five but that’s cause I like to work in batches of five.

What I used:

  • Foam Fall Leaves
  • Black marker
  • Glass beads

How I got it going:

  1. Wrote the number and the word for the number onto five of the leaves
  2. Gathered glass beads
  3. Started to play

Learning number words

This activity went well in letting her see the words and numbers together. We discussed the words under the numbers and counted them out using the glass beads as counters. After two times of me guiding her i let her do it on her own, pointing to the number word and saying it while counting out the glass beads.

Now once she gets better with them I will separate the word number from the number and have her match them up. I find introducing new things to her to lose its fun after 3-5 days and that’s when it’s time to switch it up. So far this is still going, it might be gone by the time this post goes live.

I respond well to easy setups at the moment. They get the point across the her and we can build off of it to make it fit her level as she gets better.

  2. Danielle says:

We have fall leaves from the dollar store too, so I am going to do this!

Go on and do it, make it fun while you play. You can take a die and have them roll it out and pull that leaf number and say the number the word and count it out.

I love this activity for learning number words. We will have to try this using numbers first and then number words for a bigger challenge!

We just recently left just started visiting number words. It is a challenge but when you put the actual number and the counting together with the word it makes it a little easier, they have a reference to pull from.

We just made a number book last week, so this activity would be a perfect extension for learning in another way! Off to search for my construction paper!

  5. Did you buy the foam leaves or cut them yourself they seem a fantastic resource to have available.

  7. What a neat activity! My son would love this… we’re not quite to reading written numbers yet, so maybe I would use numerals in addition to the words…

It is quick to put together and we love simple for getting the base of something down. I don’t complicate things and get completely fun with it until later.

I love this idea. I am going to have to do this but instead of the letters I need to use the numbers. Once my son gets those I think he will be ready for the letters. Thank you. Pinned and shared.
