Playful Preschool: Ponds

Pond Life Chalk Art

Welcome to another Playful Preschool Wednesday post, where a group of mothers and educators come together to bring you some free hands on learning activities that you can do with your preschooler. Last week we explored Ladybugs and this week we will be exploring Ponds.

As usual with my kids things don’t go as planned. I planned on an inside activity but on the day the weather was so beautiful that I just had to move our learning outside. It turned out to be a great idea.

Our objective for this activity was to just go out and have fun while talking about all the life that you can find in a pond. We read the book The Little Fish in The Big Pond by Tereasa O’Brien and the girls love this book. The story teaches them that in time they will grow and to value the stage that they are in at the moment.

With our outside learning fun we made a few ponds with chalk and some other items that we had on hand.

  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Greenery
  • Fish
  • Frogs
  • Bugs
  • Rocks or pebbles

In the story there is a little fish that is in what he thinks is a big pond and he feels out of place. So we drew out ponds with our chalk on the ground. After we drew the ponds we added life to them by adding the greenery, fish and other stuff. We then started to transfer the little fish from the ponds to other ponds that we drew, some with less stuff than our ponds and some with more stuff than our ponds. We talked about what was the differences in the ponds and why would the fish want to leave each of the ponds. So basically we did some pond jumping until we reached a pond that was a good fit for our little fishes.

In the end our fish ended up in their original ponds. Do you know why? Because the ponds that we made for them were where they belonged. Each pond that we transferred them to did not fit them. They were either in the way of other things and fishes or there was not enough in the pond to keep the fish alive.

The girls enjoyed this activity and were happy that I took the lesson outside.

This week we enjoyed this “Pond Ecosystem for kids” video by MakeMeGenius for our Ponds theme.
